Does My Child Need a Psychologist? 7 Warning Signs

Wondering if it is "just a phase" or your child needs therapy? A child psychologist in Valencia explains the 7 signs you shouldn't ignore.

Wondering whether what your child is going through is "just a phase" or needs therapy? Here are the 7 signs you shouldn't ignore.

"I don't know if it's their age, if it's a phase, if we're doing something wrong at home, or if they really need professional help."

As a child and adolescent psychologist in Valencia, this is the sentence that starts 90% of my first consultations. Taking the step to seek psychological help for a child isn't easy. Parents often spend weeks or months of doubt, hoping the problem will disappear on its own.

Society has repeated phrases like "they'll grow out of it", "kids will be kids" or "it's just a phase" until we're tired of hearing them. But where's the line between normal developmental behaviour and a mental health problem that requires intervention?

In this article, I want to help you clear up that doubt. We're going to analyse the **7 definitive warning signs** that tell you it's time to seek help.

The Iceberg of Child Behaviour

Before reviewing the signs, it's essential to understand a key concept in child psychology: **behaviour is just the tip of the iceberg.**

What you see (a child who hits, a teenager who locks themselves in their room, bad grades) is just the visible part. Beneath the surface, in the part we can't see, are the real emotions: fear, frustration, [childhood anxiety](/blog/ansiedad-infantil-senales-sintomas), self-esteem problems or even undiagnosed neurodivergence ([ADHD](/servicios/tdah), [Giftedness](/servicios/altas-capacidades), [ASD](/servicios/autismo)). Our job in therapy isn't just to "remove the bad behaviour", but **to understand what's beneath the surface.**

The 7 Warning Signs to Take Your Child to a Psychologist

If you observe one or more of these signs sustained over time (for more than a few weeks) and you see that they interfere with their daily life, it's time to consult a specialist.

1. Sudden, Unexplained Changes in Behaviour

This is the number one sign. If your child used to be happy and communicative and has suddenly spent a month being apathetic, sad and withdrawn. Or if, conversely, they were a calm child and now they're constantly irritable, defiant and defensive. Radical changes in personality or mood that don't go away are the language a child uses to say: **"Something is wrong with me and I don't know how to deal with it."**

2. Disproportionate Tantrums and Lack of Emotional Control

It's normal for a 2 or 3-year-old to have tantrums. But if your child is 6, 8 or 10 years old and still explodes with extreme intensity at the slightest frustration, breaks things, hits or takes hours to calm down, we're looking at an [emotional regulation](/servicios/regulacion-emocional-autoestima) problem. They're not doing it to "misbehave" — their nervous system is overwhelmed and they need tools to return to calm. (You can read more about this in our [guide on when to worry about tantrums](/blog/rabietas-ninos-cuando-preocuparse)).

3. Physical Problems Without Medical Cause (Somatisation)

The mind and body are connected. When children (and even teenagers) don't know how to express their distress in words, their body does it for them. If your child constantly complains of **tummy aches before school**, suffers frequent headaches, has nausea or skin problems, and the paediatrician has already ruled out any physical illness, we're very likely looking at a picture of stress or [anxiety](/blog/ansiedad-infantil-senales-sintomas).

4. Developmental Setbacks (Regressions)

Has your child already achieved bladder control but started wetting the bed regularly again? Were they speaking perfectly and now using "baby talk"? Were they sleeping alone and now have a terrifying fear of being separated from you at night? Regressions are a **classic defence mechanism** in childhood when the child feels threatened, stressed or anxious about a change (a new sibling, a separation, school problems).

5. Plummeting School Performance

School is a child's main social and working environment. If grades drop dramatically, if teachers tell you they're disconnected in class, or if they flatly refuse to do homework with daily crying episodes, we need to investigate. There might be a bullying problem, an emotional block, or [learning difficulties](/servicios/dificultades-aprendizaje) (such as dyslexia or ADHD) that are making them suffer in silence because they feel "not as clever as the others".

6. Severe Social Isolation

It's normal for some children to be more introverted than others. Introversion is a wonderful personality trait. However, if your child actively rejects any social contact, hides when visitors come, absolutely refuses to go to birthday parties, or has stopped seeing their regular friends, they could be developing social phobia or depressive symptoms.

7. The Family Dynamic Has Become Unsustainable

Sometimes the sign isn't just in the child, but in you as a family. If you feel that the atmosphere at home is one of constant tension, if you spend the day shouting, if you've tried punishments, rewards, points charts and long talks, and nothing works... you don't have to keep suffering. Parenting shouldn't be a daily battle. Through [Family Therapy](/servicios/terapia-familiar), we help you break that vicious cycle and restore peace at home.

Don't Wait Until the Problem Is "Serious" to Act

There's a very harmful myth that says you only go to a psychologist when you're "at breaking point". In child and adolescent mental health, **prevention is key.** Giving a 7-year-old tools to manage their anxiety is much quicker and more effective than trying to treat generalised anxiety disorder when that child is 16. Child therapy is, above all, giving them an **"emotional toolkit for life."**
