Preguntas frecuentes
What is dyscalculia and how is it different from "being bad at maths"?
Dyscalculia is a specific learning disorder of neurobiological origin that affects number sense, mathematical reasoning and arithmetic fluency. Unlike a transient struggle, it is persistent, disproportionate to the child's overall ability, and does not improve with standard tutoring alone. A proper evaluation distinguishes one from the other.
And dysgraphia? Is it just bad handwriting?
No. Dysgraphia is a neurological difficulty in the motor and planning processes involved in writing. It can affect handwriting legibility, spelling, written organisation, and the speed of written production. It often coexists with dyslexia or ADHD and requires specific intervention.
At what age should we evaluate?
A reliable evaluation is possible from age 7-8, once the child has had formal exposure to maths and writing. However, early warning signs can appear from age 5-6 (e.g., trouble counting, recognising number quantities, or holding a pencil correctly).
Are these difficulties related to intelligence?
No. Specific learning disorders are independent of overall intelligence. Many children with dyscalculia or dysgraphia have average or above-average IQ. The difficulty is domain-specific, which is why early identification is critical to prevent academic and emotional impact.
Do you coordinate with the school?
Yes. We deliver detailed clinical reports and, when needed, meet directly with teachers, counsellors and the school's psychopedagogical team to establish accommodations (extra time, calculator use, reduced written workload, etc.). School coordination is a core part of our intervention.
